When selecting sealants for building exterior walls, factors such as the usage environment, climatic conditions, and material properties of the building need to be considered. Currently, there are three common types of sealants available in the market: silicone weather-resistant sealant, polyurethane sealant, and acrylic sealant. Among these three, only one is suitable for use on external wall insulation panels – silicone weather-resistant sealant.
Let me explain why:
Firstly, in exterior wall applications, weather resistance and waterproofing are key performance requirements. Both primary and auxiliary materials must be able to withstand long-term exposure to wind, rain, and ultraviolet radiation.
Silicone Sealant
Silicone weather-resistant sealant excels in adhesion strength, weather resistance, elasticity, and environmental friendliness, making it suitable for outdoor building surfaces. It can form strong bonds with most building materials and is highly suitable for external wall insulation panel systems. Advantages include good weather resistance, aging resistance, long service life, UV resistance, and minimal impact from extreme weather conditions such as hailstorms and heavy rain.
Polyurethane Sealant
Advantages: Good adhesion strength, good low-temperature resistance.
Disadvantages: Poor UV resistance, prone to bubbling in high-temperature environments, poor weather resistance, poor resistance to rainwater erosion, not suitable for exposed external facades. It is suitable for sealing and plugging leaks in automobile manufacturing, construction, furniture manufacturing, glass curtain walls, and various industrial and civil buildings.
Acrylic Sealant
Acrylic sealant is a water-based sealant. Advantages: Good UV resistance, good heat resistance.
Disadvantages: Poor adhesion performance, not suitable for joint sealing.
