High-Performance Acrylic Duct Sealant Launched for Critical HVAC and Industrial Applications

A new class of acrylic duct sealant has entered the commercial market, targeting engineers and HVAC contractors seeking a reliable alternative to traditional water-based or rubber-based products. Developed by Advanced Polymer Technologies (APT), the sealant, branded as AeroBond AP-900, is formulated specifically for sealing seams, joints, and transverse connections in high-velocity and high-temperature air handling systems.

Unlike conventional duct mastics, the AP-900 is built on a cross-linking acrylic copolymer emulsion. According to technical data sheets released by APT, the product delivers a lap shear strength exceeding 250 psi on galvanized steel after 72 hours of cure, while maintaining elongation rates above 300 percent. This combination ensures both rigid adhesion and dynamic crack-bridging capability under thermal cycling conditions (−20°C to 120°C).

Independent lab tests confirm compliance with UL 181A and 181B — the key standards for closure systems used in rigid and flexible air ducts. The sealant also passed the flame spread and smoke development indices as defined in ASTM E84, achieving a Class 1 rating.

“Facility managers have long struggled with duct sealants that either crack after one summer cooling cycle or fail to bond to contaminated aluminum or galvanized surfaces,” said Dr. Elena Marchetti, APT’s senior product chemist. “Our acrylic system wets out effectively even on oily or slightly oxidized metals, and the cured film remains elastic without becoming brittle — even in low-humidity environments.”

Field trials conducted over 18 months across data centers, pharmaceutical cleanrooms, and commercial office buildings showed zero adhesive failures or air leakage beyond Class A thresholds, as measured by SMACNA’s HVAC duct leakage test manual. Notably, the sealant’s low VOC content (<15 g/L) allows it to be applied indoors during building occupancy, provided general ventilation is maintained.
